Losing Weight by Walking

Walking is one of the most accessible forms of exercise. A good pair of walking shoes and a bit of discipline are often all you need. Walking is also an effective way to burn calories and can therefore play an important role in weight management or weight loss. At a brisk pace of six kilometers per hour, you can burn approximately 400 kilocalories per hour. By walking seven kilometers every day (approximately ten thousand steps), you burn 466 kilocalories. If you assume for convenience that you burn seven thousand kilocalories to lose one kilo of body weight, you would theoretically lose one kilo every fifteen days.

Walking with a weighted vest

The heavier you are, the more calories you burn. So if you really want to turn your walking workout into a weight loss marathon, you could choose to purchase a weighted vest. You can buy an adjustable vest of five or ten kilos online for an amount between forty and one hundred euros. It may feel a bit like you’re wearing a bulletproof vest, and you look like one. But if you wear a light windproof jacket over it, no one will notice. Want to add even more effect to your walking training? Then you can also use ankle joints.

Is walking healthy for everyone?

What is healthy for one person, can be too much for another. So listen carefully to your body before you start walking long distances regularly. Factors such as age, physical condition, possible health problems and personal goals all play a role in determining the number of kilometres you want and can walk each day.

If you are not experienced in walking regularly and long distances, five kilometres a day is a good distance to lose weight. Even if weight loss is not your main goal, by the way. Walking regularly can help strengthen your heart, improve blood circulation and lower your blood pressure. Walking five to ten kilometres every day gives your cardiovascular system a good workout, which can have major long-term benefits for your overall health.
